Knights of Columbus Flag Relay

The Greater Sudbury Police Service, in partnership with the Knights of Columbus held the the Knights of Columbus Flag Relay for Special Olympics, Friday May 27, 2011. The Special Olympics Ontario flag was raised in honour of the 2011 Provincial Floor Hockey Championships. This event marks a year-round province wide program which is designed to create public awareness for the Knights of Columbus and Special Olympics.

For more than 40 years, the Knights of Columbus have raised and donated more than $382 million to programs for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Apart from the larger gifts of time and money, the Knights of Columbus are also actively involved in local communities across the province.

"The Knights of Columbus Flag Relay symbolizes the active involvement of our members at a grass-roots level. Supporting the Special Olympics or more specifically, people with intellectual disabilities, manifests that we are indeed our Brothers Keeper", said Arthur Peters, State Deputy, Knights of Columbus.

In all 24 communities, the Knights of Columbus have organized a flag raising event to bring attention and recognition to their hometown team and Special Olympics.

The Championships will take place on June 9-11, 2011 at Cambrian College and Lasalle Secondary School where there will be 24 teams, with over 400 athletes. Teams have earned their way to this prestigious event by qualifying through local and regional competitions.

Special Olympics is a charitable organization, dedicated to enriching the lives of people with an intellectual disability through sport.
