ONTARIO
COLLEGE COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
COLLEGE COUNCILS
The goal of the Knights of
Columbus College Councils is to help strengthen and maintain the
Catholic identity and presence on campus at the practical and
theoretical levels. College Councils offer young Catholic men the
opportunity to join a Catholic fraternal fellowship in the pursuit of
a Catholic social, spiritual and intellectual life. College Councils
also offer the opportunity to put such ideals into practice through
service to the community by helping the poor and underprivileged.
College Knights strive to achieve this goal in close collaboration
with the Campus Ministry Office and with the guidance of the Catholic
Chaplain on campus.
Today there are over 16,000
college Knights and 181 college councils in the United States,
Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Philippines. The potential for
new council development and the opportunities to attract younger
members to the Knights of Columbus are tremendous. Education,
enhanced by the spirit of Catholic fraternity, makes the college
council program both an asset to Columbianism and a valuable resource
for the continued growth of the Knights of Columbus.
Although the have the same
functions and responsibilities as any other subordinate council as
set forth in the Charter, Constitution and Laws of the Order, college
councils are characterized by some unique situations. The guidance
of the state council through the office of the state deputy and his
officers is fundamental in assisting college councils in the
development of successful programs. Because of their youth,
enthusiasm and campus surroundings, members of a college council can
incorporate special programming activities to involve students,
faculty and administrators as well as the community in which the
college is located.
The college council program is a
vibrant source of energy in that it adds to the life and growth of
the Order. It is important that we continue to nurture and build this
program to its fullest potential.
